What is Ultrasonic Testing (UT) at Element?

Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive test method utilizing sound waves to detect cracks and defects in materials and components. At Element, we provide both contact and immersion UT services for detecting flaws and measuring material thickness across diverse industries including Aerospace, Oil & Gas, and Power Generation. Our testing produces images that are more clearly defined than many other NDT methods, exposing issues that are deeper than surface level with exceptional sensitivity and accuracy. Our testing capabilities support specimens of virtually any size, from small components to large industrial equipment.

Components and materials we test

Our testing capabilities cover metals, alloys, composites, and concrete components across multiple industries. We specialize in critical components including pipeline girth welds, aerospace parts, and power generation equipment. Our expertise extends to testing large industrial components, plates, bars, and extrusions of various sizes and complexities.

  • Pipeline girth welds
  • Aerospace components
  • Power generation equipment
  • Industrial machinery
  • Metal plates and bars

Methods and solutions offered

Our flexible inspection methods adapt to your unique testing requirements, whether in the field or laboratory. When radiographic inspection isn't possible, our contact ultrasonic testing requires access to only one side of your test specimen, making it ideal for awkwardly shaped or immobile parts. We combine advanced technology with expert knowledge to deliver precise results, supporting both quality control and research applications with detailed analysis and comprehensive documentation.

  • Portable contact testing for field inspection

  • Laboratory-based immersion testing

  • Specialized techniques for complex geometries

  • Comprehensive data acquisition

  • Detailed analysis capabilities

Our comprehensive, laboratory-based immersion ultrasonic testing (IUT) methodology provides better sound travel through submersion, allowing us to detect smaller defects like cracking and porosity with exceptional accuracy. This enables precise reporting of sub-surface irregularities and flaws to support a broad range of requirements applicable to any wall thickness and material. When assessing very thick materials, our ultrasonic testing typically requires less exposure – and subsequent risk – than other methods such as radiography.

Cutting-edge equipment we use

We maintain state-of-the-art testing facilities equipped with advanced technology to handle components of all sizes and complexities. Our equipment portfolio enables precise testing and detailed analysis for thorough quality assessment.

  • Turntable immersion tanks (up to 6 feet diameter)
  • Vertical ring rolling immersion system (up to 12 feet diameter)
  • Immersion tanks for stock up to 36 feet long
  • TACTIC immersion line for pipe and bar components
  • Portable contact UT equipment
  • Advanced data acquisition systems
  • C-scan imaging technology
